Thermo Electron introduces breakthrough mass analyser

Related tags Mass spectrometry

Thermo Electron introduces a hybrid mass spectrometer that
represents the first new mass analyser to be introduced to the
market in over 20 years.

Combining patented Orbitrap technology with the Finnigan LTQ front-end, the LTQ Orbitrap enables more sensitive detection and identification of compounds in complex mixtures.

The trapping efficiency of the Orbitrap mass analyser together with its resolving power and robust external mass calibration for accurate mass analysis clearly distinguishes the LTQ Orbitrap from time-of-flight based mass spectrometers.

Orbitrap's mass capabilities include intensity independent mass accuracy without the need for internal calibration. Its LC/MS performance includes sub-femtomole sensitivity, rapid acquisition rates and multiple ionisation modes, inlets and chromatographic solutions.

The system also allows detailed small molecule analysis by the use of Data Dependent acquisition with Dynamic Exclusion. Routine high resolution with high quality MSn analysis for peptide sequencing is included with wide dynamic range and sensitivity for confident component identification in complex matrices.

Automated Data Dependent MSn acquisition with accurate mass analysis can be combined with rapid LC/MS analysis. The mass MS spectrum, typically recorded at 60,000 resolution, is used to trigger subsequent accurate mass MSn analyses.

Up to three MSn scans can be performed per second, yielding information for identification of trace level species in complex mixtures. High resolution and accurate mass with external calibration are used to confirm elemental assignments.

The Orbitrap is now available at Thermo electron's website.
