Outsourcing-Pharma presents a unique visual analysis of the globalisation of clinical trials and rise in CROs in the past 20 years, using an interactive treemap to explore the trend

Using the FDA’s database of registered clinical trial investigators Outsourcing-Pharma has graphically represented these shifts to new markets and the rising prominence of contract research organisations (CROs).

The treemap presented above is divided into three main sections that are underneath the headings “two thousand and seven”, “nineteen ninety seven” and “nineteen eighty seven”.

These blocks represent the total number of clinical trial investigators registered with the FDA in their respective years, with larger blocks representing more people. By right clicking on any of these blocks you can choose to focus on a particular period of time.

This will show that each of these three main blocks is subdivided into the regions the investigators are from, for example North America, Western Europe, Asia etc, with each region being further broken down into the countries the FDA registered clinical trial workers operate in.

Right clicking on a geographic region allows you to focus on it to give a clearer view of the respective prominence of the countries in the area. Furthermore, the strength of the orange shading signifies the number of investigators from CROs in a country.

In addition the tabs in the top left, entitled “year”, “continent” and “country” can be rearranged to alter how the treemap is divided.
