Kendle has opened two new offices in the past two weeks, one in the US and one in Sweden, in a sign that the contract research market continues to abound.

The US-based contract research organisation (CRO) has opened its tenth US office, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and with close proximity to the University of Michigan the company is hoping this new location will allow it to tap into the surrounding biotechnology community.

Meanwhile, Kendle's new office in Sweden signals the firm's first foray into Scandinavia, as the company looks to push its European reach even further.

The CRO already has offices in six Western European countries and believes that Sweden now holds a lot of potential in the clinical trials industry.

"Since the Clinical Trials Directive was implemented in May 2004, ten percent of all clinical trials in the European Union were registered in Sweden," the firm said.

Kendle also identified Sweden as a key region for the recruitment of clinical trial patients throughout Scandinavia.

"Sweden's efficient approval process, high-quality data and widely-respected regulatory agency make it an ideal location for the conduct of clinical trials," said Alan Boyce, Kendle's vice president of Global Clinical Development in Europe and Africa.

"In addition, its unique public health system allows for high enrollment rates, low drop-out rates and the successful, long-term tracking of patients."

Both new offices will offer Phase II-IV clinical trial services.
