German drug distribution and pharmacy firm Celesio has bought Ireland’s Alchemy Healthcare to drive its growth in the country’s contract sales sector.

Celesio said that Alchemy will be combined with its existing marketing unit, Pharmexx Ireland which, in addition to providing personnel and marketing, also offers warehousing and logistics services.

Board member Wolfgang Mahr said the acquisition meets with Celesio’s growth strategy and will considerably expand its presence in the thriving Irish pharmaceutical sales and marketing sector.

Alchemy managing director Mick O’leary told the Irish Times that that his firm’s strengths combined with Pharmexx’ strength in over-the-counter (OTC) drugs “will ensure a compelling business proposition for our existing and future clients.”
