The new packaging solution is the first innovation to emerge from World Courier's Climate Optimization Research & Engineering (CORE) Labs, which it launched in 2015.

Dubbed, “Cocoon,” the new packaging solution for pallet-sized shipments reduces transport costs and maintains temperature up to 40% longer than comparable products, according to the company.

Volker Kirchner, director of temperature control solutions at World Courier, explained the company received a client request for a packaging solution for a complex, temperature-controlled project, but had no solution that would enable them to offer the client with the level of thermal stability and performance needed.

There wasn’t a container on the market that would have let us execute the client’s project, so we started brainstorming what such a container would need to look like,” Kirchner explained.

We answered those questions, including the necessary specifications, and decided that if such a container didn’t exist, we’d build it ourselves.”

According to Kirchner, Cocoon is unique because it uses the newest developments in material technologies in order to provide a high degree of insulation and thermal performance, while remaining light.

So not only can we offer a higher level of temperature control, which allows clients to send temperature-sensitive material on longer/lengthier transports, but also we save them money by reducing the shipment costs involved,” he said.

The product is composed of honeycomb vacuum-insulated panels and and supports three temperature range requirements: -15 to -25 degrees Celsius, 2-8 degrees Celsius, and +15 to +25 degrees Celsius.

Additionally, it requires no external power source during transit and offers transparent qualification via World Courier’s CORE Labs.
