Canadian contracting giant Patheon has added 10,000 square feet of GMP standard oral contraceptive manufacturing space at its production facility in Toronto.

Patheon said the expansion, which has a potential output of 1.3m tablets a year, meets the marketing requirement of drug regulators in many countries that oral contraceptives are made in a dedicated production space.

This new unit features full-scale commercial production capabilities, including dispensing, granulation, compression, film coating and primary packaging.

Patheon’s president of North American operations, Terry Novak, said that: "This expansion positions Patheon to compete on a higher level for contract manufacturing opportunities and claim a larger portion of the global oral contraceptive manufacturing market."
