Asia braces for cancer surge

By Nick Taylor , 07-Jul-2011

Lung and stomach cancer are big killers in Asia, as shown by our interactive map, and there are fears the number of new cases will jump in coming years.

Increasingly western lifestyles mean and lengthening life expectancies mean cancer is becoming a bigger-and-bigger problem for countries in Asia.

In 2010 Merck & Co, Pfizer and Eli Lilly joined forces to create the Asian Cancer Research Group (ACRG) – a non-profit focused on cancers prevalent in the region. In particular, ACRG focuses on gastric and lung cancers, which, as the map shows, are common in the region.

The map below can be filtered to show the cumulative risk of different cancer sites using the drop down menu.
