Sigma-Aldrich has launched a new product that reduces the time it takes to prepare cells for use in cloning studies in which they are modified by the addition of DNA.

The system should speed up the time it takes to modify cells such as Eschericia coli and K12, which are commonly used for recombinant protein expression.

The RapidTransit Transformation Kit is designed to allow the preparation of chemically competent cells from overnight cultures. The key to the system is the RapidTransit Transformation Buffer, which quickly prepares cells for uptake of DNA without the traditional heat shock step.

The company claims that in studies that require large amounts of chemically competent cells the system should be more economical than relying on standard manufactured competent cells. Researchers are also not limited to using commercial bacterial strains.

"The system eliminates complex buffer preparation and lengthy incubation periods found in traditional methods while reducing the number of procedural steps,"said the company .
