Alcan Pharma Center, a US division of flexible packaging unit Alcan Packaging, has installed a new four colour Rotomec 3000-5 ES gravure printing press, with in-line coating from UK company Valmet Converting.

The company writes this week that the press has been designed to handle both aluminium foil and various types of plastic film. The Rotomec 3000-5 ES has four printing stations and is equipped with the unique Rotomec electronic shaft (ES) technology. All four-colour stations have high efficiency dryers that claim to be up to 30 per cent more efficient than the standard dryer.

The Rotomec is capable of holding register at 0.002 of an inch (0.05mm) and has been installed, claims the Alcan Pharma Center, to reduce the long lead times currently required for copy changes on pharmaceutical packaging.

"Nothing is more important to a pharmaceutical company than a prompt product launch. This press will allow us to respond quickly to requests for copy changes and to develop printed material far more quickly than before," said Sandy Hoehn, Alcan Pharma Center's marketing manager.

"Another significant feature of the Rotomec press is that the amount of material lost or wasted due to set-up and registration is negligible," Hoehn added.

Alcan reported that the pharmaceutical industry - an increasingly valuable market for the company -is currently showing an annual eight per cent growth across the world.
