Avantium Technologies of the Netherlands, a specialist in developing high throughput process R&D techniques for customers in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, has been signed up by Eastman Chemical for the discovery of new and improved catalytic systems for various speciality chemical products.

The project will draw upon Avantium's proven capabilities in the combination of parallel reactor technology and advanced cheminformatics tools for rational catalyst discovery and optimisation.

"High throughput experimentation, by improving the effectiveness of process R&D, can reduce significantly the time-to-market of new chemical entities," according to the company.

Under the agreement, Avantium Technologies will utilise high throughput technology and simulation techniques to perform screening experiments relevant to catalytic systems for the production of speciality chemicals. The project follows the successful completion of a previous collaboration between the two companies that began in September 2001.

Avantium's says its approach provides intrinsically scaleable catalyst and process screening and early indication of route robustness, thus allowing rapid and reliable scale-up to pilot plant and production.

In February of this year, Avantium combined its pharmaceuticals business with its Crystallics business unit to create Avantium Life Sciences, providing product and process optimisation from molecule identification through to scale-up.
