Australian firm Biotechnology Frontiers has been awarded a government grant to develop a new microbiological quality control tool that can be used in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

The A$780,000 award (€470,000) is for a new product, called BioBall, that provides a precise number of bacteria in a sample that laboratories can use to accurately benchmark the performance of their quality control testing.

Mark Gauci, chief executive of the Sydney-based company, said that the BioBall had already found a niche in water supply testing and was expected to be a useful product for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, in which adherence to regulatory standards must be precise.

"Demand for precision is growing as biological test results become increasingly critical to the quality of consumer products, the maintenance of public health and the satisfaction of government standards," continued Gauci. He added that currently available Biological Reference Materials lack this level of precision, and therefore do not fill this need.
