A broadly focused European pharmaceutical conference covering drug discovery, development and commercialisation is scheduled to take place next March in Edinburgh, Scotland.

SCIpharm 2004 will review the current state of scientific knowledge and how this is being applied in R&D and the business arena of the pharmaceutical sector, according to the organisers, the Society of Chemical Industry.

The five-day meeting, held 21-25 March, will include four concurrent tracks covering developments in the areas of gene-to-screen, screen-to-candidate, candidate-to-drug and the interface of science and business. In addition to the conference, there will be a commercial exhibition and poster sessions.

"This meeting is essential for all those in the field. It will provide the perfect opportunity to learn about the latest developments and offers the chance for delegates to network with those in the industry," said conference committee chairman, Graham Dixon of antifungal drug development company F2G.

SCIpharm 2004 is geared towards individuals working in R&D, processing and production, patient healthcare, management, business development, regulation, legal and intellectual property fields.

Keynote presentations at the conference will be made by: Dr Trevor Jones, director general of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI); Allan Baxter, senior vice president, drug discovery, at GlaxoSmithKline; and Martin Nicklasson, head of global development at AstraZeneca.
