LGC Promochem has opened a new sales office in Italy as part of its strategy to expand its network of operations across Europe.

The opening of the new subsidiary, called LGC Promochem srl, comes in the wake of LGC Promochem's acquisition of Erre Emme Reference Materials, a family-owned Italian company. It started operations on 1 September, according to the parent company.

Gabriella Somaschini, former director and joint founder of Erre Emme, has been appointed as Country Manager for LGC Promochem srl and also has responsibility for the General Reference Materials sales of the new business.

She said: "The move will enable us to serve our Italian customers better. Our new home in the Laboratorio Innovazione Breda will also provide us with good contacts to university institutes and local biotech companies."

LGC Promochem claims to offer Europe's most comprehensive source of pharmaceutical reference substances and impurities, as well as a range of high purity solvents. Its suppliers include organisations such as the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as well as US Pharmacopoeia, Mikromol, Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Cerilliant and LGC.

The UK-based company has been on something of an acquisition trial of late, buying Germany's Mikromol in July to bring in its first non-UK-based laboratory facilities.
