Metrohm cleans up ion chromatography

Switzerland's Metrohm has developed a new delivery system for
reagents used in ion chromatography that is designed to reduce
wastage, improve safety in the lab and does away with the need to
dispose of spent eluent cartridges.

The MPak range of reagents that can be customised to order and are provided in flexible plastic bags with a quick-release connection system. Each 5 litre bag can be attached to the IC system, and as it empties a fresh one can be connected within seconds thanks to a quick release connection system.

"With the system, the user has clean handling of the IC application even in a hostile environment, no chemists are required and there is no need for ultra-pure water for preparation of the mobile phase," said the company in a statement.

The MPak bags do away with the need for in-house laboratory reagent production and are tested to be almost free of gas diffusion, according to the firm. Once emptied, there is no chemical waste - or disposal of an expired eluent generator cartridge - only an empty plastic bag.

Metrohm also claims low running costs with the products, as there is no costly replacement of expired eluent generator cartridges or trap columns.

For a limited time Metrohm is offering a one year supply of the MPak certified eluent, along with the MPak cabinet that houses the bags, free of charge with every new Metrohm ion chromatograph purchased.

At the end of the 12 month period, customers have the option to continue with the MPak certified eluents or revert to preparing the mobile phase in the conventional manner.
