Thermo enhances GC, GC/MS autosampling

Thermo Electron has updated its XYZ robotic TriPlus Autosampler
(AS) for increased sample throughput for GC and GC/MS applications
in the pharmaceutical, food, fragrance and environmental
laboratories.

All these laboratories can now access improved levels of productivity along with flexibility and ease of use in automation. Laboratory efficiency can be further extended with the additional new capability allowing the TriPlus Autosampler to automate simultaneously two adjacent GCs or GC/MS systems.

In the simplest terms the GC/MS instrument represents a device that separates chemical mixtures (the GC component) and a very sensitive detector (the MS component) with a data collector (the computer component).

Identification of a compound based on its mass spectrum relies on the fact that every compound has a unique fragmentation pattern. Generally, more information is generated than could possibly be used.

A library of known mass spectra which may be several thousand compounds in size is stored on the computer and may be searched using computer algorithms to assist the analyst in identifying the unknown. The ultimate goal is accurate identification of a compound, which can be facilitated by the utilisation of the GC/MS.

The TriPlus Autosampler is available in three different configurations. The TriPlus AS for liquid injection has a single or double vial tray that holds up to 300 vials. Combined with any Thermo GC injector, this version of the instrument facilitates all injection techniques. With full control of sample handling and injection parameters, and extensive clean-up procedures using multiple solvents, the injection phase is fully automated.

In addition to robotic control of vial and syringe operations over a 3D space, the TriPlus Autosampler is a user-friendly and versatile instrument. Operating via data systems or local PDAs, the TriPlus control functionality enables automatic alignment procedures and self-recognition of all available accessories. This includes solvent stations, barcode readers, incubation oven and vial tray holders allowing quick installation and easy start-up.
