Greenbridge Environmental Control of the UK has introdueced a new
cleaner and disinfectant agent, suitable for commercial scale
applications, that is claimed to be the first non-toxic product of
its type.

Activ8, which debuted at the UK Infection Control Nurses Association conference on 26 September, has been proven to be highly effective against a wide spectrum of bacteria, viruses and fungi including serious pathogens such as Avian influenza, the serious acute respiratory syndome (SARS) virus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, norovirus, hepatitis B and C and mycobacteria. In addition to stopping the spread of pathogens in a clinical environment, the product is also suitable for use for decontamination in the process industries, according to Greenbridge. "Activ8 offers powerful cleaning and protection in a single, non-toxic, environmentally safe product suitable for medical, commercial or household use'" said the company in a statement. A series of laboratory tests and field trials over the last 18 months, as well as clinical trials in an NHS hospital have been completed on the product. Activ8 works by irreversibly binding, penetrating and immobilising bacteria, viruses and fungi so that they cannot replicate, according to Greenbridge. The product is packaged as floor cleaner, surface cleaner, impregnated wipes and liquid soap and can also be used in vaporisers for cleaning and decontaminating large air spaces. It is safe for use with no special precautions because it is as non-toxic as ordinary household soap, says the company, and is non-foaming, can be used on a wide range of materials including stainless steel and fulfils Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and all Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) requirements. Activ8 is available to medical and commercial customers in the UK with immediate effect, said Greenbridge, which added that it is actively seeking commercial partners to open up further global markets.
