Elkhart General Healthcare System has purchased Omnicell SafetyPak
medication packaging technology to help increase dispensing
accuracy and improve patient safety.

SafetyPak is a unit-dose and multi-dose oral solid medication packaging solution that enables pharmacies to automate the replenishment of decentralised medication cabinets as well as the filling of individual patient medication bins.

A fully automated bar code medication packaging system allows pharmacies to improve dispensing accuracy, increase productivity, and reduce costs.

Omnicell reckon that the SafetyPak offers the flexibility to address the varied needs of all types of pharmacy operations.

The system's medication safety, inventory control, high-capacity storage and automated packaging benefits can be justified in outpatient pharmacies and central pharmacies in hospitals of 150 beds or more.

"SafetyPak will allow us to repackage our bulk medications into bar coded, individual doses and will integrate with our cart-fill system," explained Susan Hawes, Elkhart's director of pharmacy.

"This is one step in achieving bar coding all medications, which is required to meet the hospital's patient safety goal of verifying the five rights of medication administration at the bedside," she added.
