Hopax Fine Chemicals is building a new facility in Kaohsiung,
Taiwan, in a move to raise current production capacity by five
folds and become one of the top providers for biological buffers
and specialty chemicals for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology
industry.

The company said the expansion aims to satisfy the ever-growing need for fine chemicals in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, driven by continuing development in technologies and material for diagnosis, therapy, or extended product applications.

Fine chemicals play a role as either an additive or an intermediate for pharmaceuticals.

"The expansion will strengthen us for future growth. The increase in production volume will meet market demands and also provide cost benefits for customers," said I-Chien Wei, >Hopax.

Hopax's added manufacturing capacity is expected to secure the company sales of around $30 million (€25.4 million).

"We have seen a continued growth in demand for fine chemicals every year, as reflected by our sales, and we predict there is room for large growth in this market as the demands continue to increase," said Wei.

Completion of the $20 million site is expected in the second quarter of 2006 and manufacturing capacity will exceed 900 mt/year of fine chemicals.

The facility will consist of two plants, both certified with ISO 9000 and 14,000, and one of them will further comply to cGMP.

As the demand in quality requirements for pharmaceutical ingredients and manufacturing processes also increases worldwide, Asian companies such as Hopax are increasingly moving to comply with cGMP in order to compete in the market.
