Samson Medical Technologies has signed a co-marketing agreement
with Baxa for its novel packaging system designed to improve
patient safety by reducing the risk of medication errors in
prescription drug compounding.

SmartPak is a sterile plastic bag that contains varying amounts of a bulk drug product that is then reconstituted for prescription drug compounding.

It provides an efficient alternative to reconstituting multiple small-volume drug vials, then withdrawing individual doses or pooling larger volumes for intravenous or syringe filling.

In a recent hospital study, the use of a 300 gram SmartPak bag saved 45 minutes in dose preparation time over the use of traditional 10 gram vials, said >Samson MedicalTechnologies.

As such, it reduces the risk of contaminated end product by minimising manipulations and also eliminates glass breakage and contamination that can occur with glass vial packaging.

"SmartPak was designed to help hospital and alternate site pharmacies meet the challenges of providing compounded intravenous medications in a safe, timely and cost-effective way to patients," said Marvin Samson, founder and CEO of Samson Medical Technologies.

Under the marketing agreement, >Baxa representatives will promote the SmartPak Bags in conjunction with the Baxa Rapid-Fill Automated Syringe Filler (ASF) and the Repeater Pharmacy Pump.

The Rapid-Fill ASF automates the process of filling, capping and labeling of sterile IV syringes from a bulk reservoir, making it the ideal vehicle for SmartPak drug delivery, the company said.

"Using the SmartPak Bags with the Baxa automated syringe filler and Repeater Pump will make it easier for pharmacists to comply with best practice for sterile compounding," said Samson.
