New moisture management service from Multisorb
range of consulting services to accompany its well-known range of
sorbent products and save customers both time and money in drug
packaging.
The company's new Moisture Management Analysis services will assist drug manufacturers in determining what kind and how much of a sorbent is needed to correctly manage moisture in packaging their drug.
Pharmaceuticals are subject to a variety of degradation pathways, primarily caused by water and air, that compromise drug safety and shelf life.
Preventing moisture degradation in packaging is a critical issue for drug makers, especially for new drugs coming onto the market, that may have different control needs.
Free of charge, Multisorb's team of packaging engineers, formulation chemists and analytical chemists will calculate what type and size of desiccant and oxygen scavenger is required for a particular drug, depending on the type of packaging being used.
"In this way, we form a bridge between the packaging manufacturers and the biochemists and simplify the whole absorbent process for everybody," Peter Donnelly, marketing applications specialist, Multisorb, told In-PharmaTechnologist.com.
"In addition to saving the customer time, we also save them money by optimising the absorbent process, helping them choose the right type of desiccant and the right amount of desiccant, so as not to waste money using more than is needed," he said.
As part of its services expansion, Multisorb can also now work right from the start with chemists who are developing drugs, to help them avoid formulations that are hard to package.
"Many chemists involved in drug development don't necessarily entirely understand the factors involved in drug degradation by water and air," said Donnelly.
Other applications of Multisorb's moisture management services include extending the shelf life of existing drugs or giving life to known formulations that couldn't previously be made into drugs, as they were previously too unstable.
"We are the only company to offer such consulting services to go with our absorbent products. All our competitors only offer various services that are fragmented," Multisorb's managing director, Derek Hepburn, told In-PharmaTechnologist.com.
"We are experiencing a positive response from customers wanting to work with us from conception to grade and we are now in the process of closing several large accounts," he said.
"The FDA has also given our services the thumbs up, and current FDA guidance has made changing desiccant formats a relatively simple procedure," said Hepburn.
