Anderson Packaging has bought 12 acres of land next to its existing
US headquarters and now plans to build another new facility to
expand its contract pharma packaging capacity by 20 per cent.

The firm said it will construct a 200,000 square foot manufacturing plant to "accommodate growth in its existing core packaging operations" including thermoformed blisters, bottles and pouches, as well as secondary packaging options such as carded blisters, cartons, and complex kit assemblies.

Anderson, a wholly owned subsidiary of the AmerisourceBergen Corporation, is based in Rockford, Illinois, and already operates seven packaging facilities in the Rockford area totalling over 900,000 square feet.

The company is one of the fastest growing pharmaceutical contract packagers in the US and its latest expansion plans follow only one year after it opened a new 148,000 square foot drug packaging facility on the same site.

"We have been experiencing steady continuous growth in our business and acquiring this property is consistent with our corporate philosophy of developing additional capacity in anticipation of future need," said a company spokesperson.

"We believe providing excess capacity is really the only way to provide the service and responsiveness our customers require in such a dynamic market."

The contract packaging market is tipped to grow to $6.8bn (€5.4bn) by 2013 and Anderson is gearing up to take on the big guns in the industry.

Anderson uses Delcam's FeatureCAM software to offer full-service contract packaging from new product launches to full-scale production including validation, processing and tooling as well as specialised services such as package development, including design of child-resistant and patient compliance prompting features.

The firm believes its full range of in-house drug packaging capabilities, coupled with its software technology and on-site tooling fabrication facilities, allows it to speed up the packaging development process while keeping costs down.
