A number of small to medium sized firms are unaware of how to use
their resources effectively to comply with hazardous waste
regulations, opening up an opportunity for online advice to address
problems facing these companies.

UK-based HazCom has recently launched a website, www.becompliant.co.uk, that advises firms on requirements needed to comply with hazardous waste legislations. Small firms might not have the in-house expertise to cope with legislations and might struggle with the pace and volume of new legislations, according to the company.

" With the enactment of the hazardous waste regulations in 2005, the issue became more complicated and this is where the idea came from to web enable a solution that companies could use to simplify the regulations, provide compliance guidance and to give them applications and tools to complete all the legal documentation that must accompany any shipment of hazardous waste," Phil Orford, the site's creator, told In-PharmaTechnologist.com.

Businesses that fully understand and comply with waste regulations will be at a competitive advantage, ultimately resulting in potential cost savings by using online tools to create their own consignment documentation. In addition, these tools also provide the user with compliance indicators and checklists to avoid incidents and fines.

" At the moment our applications and tools only cover the hazardous waste regulations. We expect to launch other modules in the coming months," said Orford.

"The demand for web-enabled applications has grown significantly. Being web enabled means that these applications are always up to date (no re-issue of software discs), that the data is safe and secure (backed up daily) and that it can be accessed from anywhere (not restricted to one user on one PC) ."

The website is easy to use by organisations familiar with hazardous waste regulatory compliance and subscribers can get access to IT and technical support if necessary, according to HazCom.
