Millipore has added a small-volume unit to the NovaSeptum range of
sterile disposable sampling systems it acquired with Swedish
company NovAseptic in July 2005.

The new NovaSeptum AV Accurate Volume system is "designed to meet the challenges of aseptic and sterile sampling in the production of today's high-value biotherapeutic products", Millipore stated, adding that the ability accurately to sample small volumes of drug with minimal waste improved final product yield. It also saved on costs, noted Millipore's Shannon Meirzon, who said the trend to more personalised medicine was resulting in ever smaller production batches. Like other samplers in the NovaSeptum range, the AV system has a closed design that removes the need to clean and sterilise containers between samples as well as guarding against cross-contamination and false positives. The ability to dispense product with millilitre accuracy also improved sampling efficiency and cut out the aliquoting step, further reducing the risk of cross-contamination, Millipore pointed out. The NovaSeptum AV Accurate Volume system is essentially an upgrade of the NovaSeptum AV small-volume sampler launched by NovAseptic in May 2005, before the acquisition, Meirzon confirmed. The difference, she said, was that the new model had a sample size of up to 20ml whereas the old version was limited to 5ml per sample.
