Applied Biosystems (ABI) has launched a new thermal cycler technology that is expected to increase the accuracy and efficiency of the polymerase chain reactions (PCR). The new temperature-control technology is being introduced in the new Veriti 96-Well Thermal Cycler. "Based on our initial experience, it appears that the Veriti Thermal Cycler will allow us to troubleshoot or do a whole battery of tests across a broad range of different temperatures in a single run, something that previously required using multiple thermal cyclers," said Hector Rivera, Manager of the DNA Sequencing Lab at the City of Hope's Beckman Research Institute. BioDiscovery has launched a new microarray data management platform, GeneDirector 3.5, which features extended data management support for Affymetrix, Illiumina and Agilent microarray platforms. "With this release our emphasis is on extending integration with all the major array platforms," said BioDiscovery CEO Dr Soheil Shams. Cytocentrics has developed a cell culture kit, Instant Cells, which the company claims guarantees a high cell quality with minimum effort, time and money. In contrast to conventional cell culture, frozen Instant Cells are ready to use in less than 15 minutes after defrosting without further cultivation. Genetix has introduced a new cell based assay platform, dubbed CellReporter. The company claims that the new platform combines the speed of a plate reader, the quality if a microscope and the insight of high content assays to allow researchers to gain compound hit list data in minutes after assay completion compared with days for traditional workflows. Millipore has announced the availability of a new disposable ultrafiltration cartridge. BioPak C, designed to minimise the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) released by bacteria that may be present in immunoassay and clinical analyser feed water used to prepare buffers, make blanks and rinse tubing and probes. ALP can interfere with some biochemical assays, resulting in inconsistent blanks and/or the need for more frequent decontamination and calibration. Millipore has also announced the addition of the human L-type calcium channel to its CardiacProfile Service for compound liability testing. The use of recombinant cell lines that express multiple subunit ion channels has become an integral part of testing the potential cardiac risk of drug leads. The development of these cell lines has been complicated, but Millipore claims to have simplified the process with the release of its PrecisIO hCav1.2 recombinant cell line. Molecular Devices, a division of MDS Analytical Technologies, has launched a live cell Neurotransmitter Transporter Uptake Assay Kit, to allow researchers to screen for live cell kinetic uptake of three key neurotransmitters - dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin - in a homogeneous, fluorescence-based, high-throughput screening procedure that eliminates the use of radioactive tags or labels. "Neurotransmitter transporters have become important pharmaceutical targets, as they play a key role in depression and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. The ability to monitor live cell uptake of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin neurotransmitters is critical to better understanding these diseases," said Andy Boorn, President of MDS Analytical Technologies. Porvair Sciences has introduced a range of clear-bottomed microplates designed to offer excellent performance in the long wavelength UV region. The Krystal-UV plates are available in 24-, 96- and 384-well formats, with the company claiming that they offer excellent photometric performance down to 325nm. Radleys has launched the third generation of its Carousel Stirring Hotplate which the company says enables faster heating, more powerful stirring, greater accuracy and superior safety. The system offers adjustable speed control from 0 to 1200 rpm and a stirring capacity of up to 20 litres of water combined with a powerful 600-Watt heater that rapidly heats to 310°C. Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced a new -86°C upright freezer range, the Revco PLUS, designed for high performance in laboratories that require maximum temperature recovery and operational efficiency. The company claims the freezers consume less power and emit less noise.
