Domino Printing is expanding its presence in Portugal through the €7m ($9m) acquisition of Labeljet SA and its subsidiary Marque TDI, which is currently a distributor for the traceability specialist.

The acquisition is the latest in a string of deals made by Domino, which has been attempting to expand its presence in markets throughout Europe and North America.

Domino’s attention has now turned to Portugal, with this acquisition giving the company complete control of its operations in the country and adding Labeljet’s operating profits, which were €7.8m in 2008, to its own.

Nigel Bond, Group managing director, said: "We are delighted to announce the acquisition of our Portuguese distributor Marque TDI, and that Henrique and Ricardo Goncalves the founders and former owners of the business will remain in their current roles as leaders and managers of the business.

Marque has built an enviable record for customer service and occupies a leading position in the Portuguese market. The acquisition will enhance profitability and provides a platform to sell a wider range of products."

Domino will pay an initial €4m to acquire Labelject, with a further €3m being paid over a period up to three years. The acquisition is subject to approval by the Portuguese Competition Authority.

Domino launches new G-Series printer

Domino has also been expanding its in-house capabilities through new product launches, such as the G-Series printer that was shown at Packtech in Birmingham, UK last month.

The printer has been designed to meet the quality and speed demands of the pharmaceutical industry and is capable of resolutions up to 600dpi (dots per inch) and rates of 300 metres a minute.

In addition the G-Series can quickly be switched between ethanol and water based inks, which enables the user to change from porous to non-porous material.
