BioStorage Technologies "rolls out" mobile biorepository for samples and APIs
The 52ft, refrigerated truck, named Osiris, is designed to transport everything from human biomaterials collected during trials to temperature-sensitive active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in a fully compliant with good storage and distribution practices (GSP/GDP).
BioStorage Technologies' global head of logistics and facilities, Jeff Clark, said that drug industry recognition of the importance of good storage practices for samples and sensitive pharmaceuticals was the key motivation for creating Osiris.
Clark told Outsourcing-Pharma that: “We set out to develop a vehicle that is equipped with the same technology and adheres to the same policies and operating procedures that are consistent with our facility-based biorepositories.
He explained that Osiris’ capacity to simultaneously transport multiple samples and drug components at a range of temperatures is its key strength.
“Theoretically there could be product transported at 2-4°C, moving with LN2 temperature samples and -20°C bulk samples all within the sample trailer and individually monitored and data logged. This allows us great flexibility and the bandwidth to support numerous clients at one time.”
BioStorage Technologies invested $575,000 in Osiris, creating it in partnership with a number of other firms, including cold-chain specialist Pace Air Freight, mobile temperature tech experts Thermo King, Great Dane Trailers, Aero Industries and Aspachi Networks.
Clark also that while other logistics providers have trucks offering some of Osiris’ capabilities “there is no other vehicle with the sophistication in technology, service capabilities or carbon emissions that’s achieved with Osiris.”
He went on to suggest that launching a similar service at its operation in Frankfurt, Germany would “be a natural progression for future mobile technology platforms. However, this would only occur once we have fully tested Osiris and it’s capabilities in the US.”
