A decade of animal safety and efficacy testing – visualised

Toxicology testing on animals in Great Britain fell in 2009 but is still up from the start of the decade. Outsourcing-Pharma explores this overall trend, and the fluctuations in use of specific species and tests, in an interactive visualisation of the past 10 years.

A 13 per cent drop in 2009 ended several years of increases in the number of animals used in pharma safety and efficacy testing in Great Britain. This drop, and the other ups and downs of the past decade, is displayed by the interactive visualisation below.

The dropdown menu at the top allows for the selection of the overall data from the past decade or a particular year. Selecting a group in the first graph filters the subsequent charts. This can be further filtered to give data for an individual species by clicking on the second graph.

Finally, selecting a subsection of the pie chart will filter the line graph to show just how use of that test type has changed over time.

Animal testing reports from the past decade are available here. Data collated from these reports by Outsourcing-Pharma can be viewed here.
