Microscan has introduced a system for inspecting and verifying package label content that can be implemented with the minimum of cost and effort.

VS-1 Track and Trace brings together a number of Microscan products to help biopharm implement a packaging regulation compliant verification system easily and with minimum investment.

Using the system companies can: verify information on labels, such as sell-by dates and item and batch data; check inserts, outserts and cartons; inspect print quality and readability; and detect correct seating of screw caps.

Furthermore, the system is capable of performing decoding and quality verification of linear barcodes, Data Matrix and GS1 Databar, making it applicable to track and trace.

Microscan says the system will support companies that are “required by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to check the content and legibility of date and lot codes, and are bound by good manufacturing practice (GMP) to verify that pharmaceutical packaging is correctly formed.”

VS-1 components

To perform these tasks Microscan has combined its VS-1 smart camera and lens with its Visionscape I-Pak inspection software. Also, the system uses an integrated Nerlite dark field light and an Intellifind geometric location tool.

The VS-1 smart camera processes up to 3,600 parts per minute and links up to the Visionscape software. Image transformation and analysis, such as character verification, and reading and verification of barcodes are performed by the Visionscape software.

Furthermore, inclusion of Intellifind, a geometric pattern match tool including scale measurement, means the system can locate and recognise patterns in noisy images.

Interested parties will have the opportunity to see the complete inspection system from October 31 to November 3 when Microscan shows it at Pack Expo International 2010 in Chicago, Illinois, US.
