Pfizer recalls more Lipitor after pallet-linked odour detected

Pfizer is to recall a further 19,000 bottles of Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) from the US after a customer reported “an uncharacteristic odour”.

The recall is the fourth since August and follows similar issues at Johnson & Johnson. Pfizer said the odour prompting the latest recall is consistent with the use of 2,4,6 Tribromophenol (TBP), a chemical used on wooden pallets that has been linked to earlier odour-based recalls.

Use of TBP-treated wood is now prohibited by Pfizer but the recalled lot was packaged and shipped before it changed its policy in August. Further recalls of products filled by Pfizer’s contract partner before August are possible.

Pfizer expects to have sufficient Lipitor to meet demand.
