Generic drugs win a thumbs up from animal lovers

Generic drug production is on the up in animal heath care.

The amount of generic drugs now available in the veterinary office has shot up from 5 per cent five years ago, to 10 per cent in the latest figures.

Veterinarians can now prescribe any of four types of drugs for animals— human-approved branded and generic drugs, or pet-approved branded and generics.

But with an average discount of 25 per cent compared to their branded equals, it is perhaps not surprising that animal owners are choosing generic options.

President of Connecticut animal health consultancy company Fountain Agricounsel LLC, Robert Fountain II, thinks the boom in trade is only the tip of the iceberg.

According to Fountain half of our fuzzy companions’ medication will be of the generic variety within the next decade.

“We've been saying that this is the dawn of the bull market for generic animal health drugs.”
