Mettler Toledo is taking its ramped-up track and trace offering to the US in a bid to plug what it says is a sizeable gap in the market.

In September last year, the firm took over German-based inspections solutions firm Pharmacontrol Electronic (PCE) in the face of regulatory, and hence industry, demand for greater control over counterfeiting in the supply chain.

Now after integrating the technology, which allows complete a full aggregation solution across their entire line – the company was previously limited to just an authentication model – Mettler is going State-side.

Speaking to at this year’s Interphex in New York, regional sales manager of pharmaceutical Janice Wortham said: “There is a need for this, but not too many vendors to supply it.

“Many of our customers are looking at the 100-200 lines globally they need to serialise not just for regulatory compliance but also for their internal initiative.”

She said that PCE have already provided a solid base in both Western and Eastern Europe, adding “we can now bring this to the North American market.”

As for customers, it seems big players are the aim. Wortham listed Abbot, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, as well as generic companies Teva and Watson as the ideal target client base.
