Independence Blue Cross selects LabCorp as preferred provider
US health insurer Independence Blue Cross (IBC) has selected LabCorp to be its preferred provider for outpatient and specialty lab services under a new eight year deal.

We selected LabCorp based on our due diligence and thorough review of the information we received. We are equally impressed by LabCorp who  over the coming months will invest significantly in their southeastern Pennsylvania workforce and infrastructure to support IBC’s members and physician network,” Karen Godlewski, IBC spokeswoman, told Outsourcing-Pharma.com.

To meet the demand of IBC, LabCorp is expanding its specimen collection sites, as well as expanding its network of patient service centers. LabCorp anticipates building an additional 50 patient service centers, which will amount to a network of 170 specimen collection sites in the IBC service area by July 1.

In late 2013, we initiated a project to evaluate an exclusive national outpatient laboratory network concept, which has been effective in helping other insurers contain medical costs without affecting quality,” Godlewski said. “Our partnership with LabCorp, a leading national laboratory, will allow for enhanced clinical initiatives to improve patient care.”

The first of the newest sites will be built in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Seven sites are currently under construction.

Specimen services

LabCorp will also provide lab specimen courier pick-up services for all applicable participating physician offices effective July 1, 2014, Godlewski told us, noting the company also has also developed specialty testing operation through its Specialty Testing Group, including Dianon Pathology, Integrated Oncology, Integrated Genetics, MedTox Laboratories, Monogram BioSciences, Litholink, Endocrine Sciences, and Colorado Coagulation.

These specialty testing businesses provide clients with access to industry-leading expertise and the latest developments in medical diagnostics,” she said.

The deal comes as Covance recently sold LabCorp its Seattle, Washington-based high-complexity genomics laboratory. Covance will continue to offer client services from the lab as part of a deal with LabCorp.
