GNS Healthcare has hired three experts in real world outcomes and comparative effectiveness to its Scientific Advisory Board to help guide the company’s big data modelling.
Peter Neumann (pictured) is among the appointees and is Director of the Center for the Evaluation of Value and Risk in Health at Tufts Medical Center. His research focuses on analysing cost-effectiveness in health care decision making, the US Food and Drug Administration's regulation of health economic information.
Joining him on the board is James Robins, the Mitchell L. and Robin LaFoley Dong Professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. Robins’s past work has developed analytic methods for drawing causal inferences from complex observational and randomized studies with time-varying exposures or treatments.
On his appointment, Robins said that although statistical causal methods have been developed to analyse data in comparative effectiveness research, these have not yet been integrated with “the powerful big data methods being developed in machine learning.” GNS Healthcare’s big data analytics platform “integrates causal and machine learning methodologies, thereby producing high level, state of the art, comparative effectiveness analyses,” he said.
The third scientist joining the board is Isaac Kohane, Director of the Children’s Hospital Informatics Program at Harvard Medical School. His work at Harvard uses genomics and computer science to study diseases through the perspective of biological development, and he has developed computer systems allowing multiple hospital systems to be used as “living laboratories” to study the genetic basis of disease while preserving patient privacy.
