Environmental Award
Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation Recipharm has presented its International Environmental Award to scientist Ettore Zuccato for his work examining water contamination from pharmaceuticals.
Zuccato is head of the Laboratory of Food Toxicology, Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, Italy.
His work, published in The Lancet, identified pharmaceutical pollutants in Italian rivers, sewage treatment plants and drinking water samples. His team has discovered an analytical method to identify APIs of different therapeutic categories present in waste water.
Lars Backsell, Recipharm Chairman, called Zuccato “one the foremost authorities and leaders in the field of environmental contamination by pharmaceuticals” and stressed the need for “proper evaluation of the multiple possibilities offered by new technologies to improve pharmaceuticals to mitigate the adverse environmental consequences of widespread environmental contamination.”
