Being geographically close to customers reduces excipient costs and timelines says Colorcon, as it prepares to open the doors at its first South American production plant.

In May, Colorcon said it was building a film coating manufacturing facility in Indaiatuba, Brazil, its first in South America.

With the firm announcing the completion of the facility at CPhI Worldwide in Barcelona, Spain this month, we spoke with global market communications manager Deborah Taylor to discover how this plant will fit into Colorcon’s strategy once the doors open in January next year.

“We want to make it easy for customers to work with Colorcon,” she told in-Pharmatechnologist.com. “This facility allows our customers to take advantage of shorter lead times on all of our film coating products, and reduces the risk of importation delays.”

The site itself will make pigmented, white and clear film coatings, as well as immediate and modified release film coating systems, for the pharmaceutical and nutritional markets across South America, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

While it is Colorcon’s first manufacturing facility in Brazil, the firm has a technical laboratory in Cotia, Sao Paulo and recently opened its fourth formulation laboratory in Bogota, Colombia.

“The Indaiatuba facility is another important step in further securing the supply chain for our customers, by providing a South American component in Colorcon’ s Business Continuity Plan, with the capability to supply and export film coatings with the same quality, consistency and equivalency for product manufactured in our other six production plants around the world.”

While Taylor was unable to comment on the cost of the facility, she told us the plant will benefit local customers and is an example of Colorcon’s strategy to position manufacturing facilities close to its customers.

“We are serving the local market and reducing cost of importation for these speciality excipients, as well as reducing lead-times for pigmented coatings in particular, which can have shorter shelf-life due to the pigments included.”
