UK-based packaging giant Rexam has launched a new child-resistant
closure designed specifically for use in the pharmaceutical and
healthcare markets.

The new closure, dubbed the Squeeze-Lok Low Profile, is a non-torque dependent, one-piece continuous thread closure with a squeeze-and-turn mechanism featuring a locked position that can be seen, heard and felt.

The closure's tabs provide visual and audio verification that the cap is latched; an audible 'snap' takes place as the cap is being turned; and the patient can feel the tabs drop onto place when the cap is being closed.

Rexam said that focus group tests show consumers prefer squeeze-and-turn child-resistant closures two-to-one over other types of CR caps. The new closures meets Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) protocols, meaning that it is easily opened and closed by adults aged 50 to 70. In these studies, older adults could easily open the closure, but the children under five could not.

Rexam has also designed aproduct with features that make it easy and cost-effective to manufacture. The Squeeze-Lok Low Profile has a one-piece design requires only a single molding operation, eliminating secondary assembly. Its large diameter provides a mechanical advantage for ease of opening. The closure is available in 24mm, 28mm 33mm, 38mm, 45mm, and 53mm sizes.

Rexam said that the Low Profile can be used on an array of prescription medications and nutritional supplements, specifically tablets and dry products.
