Serialized rodents? Envigo implements surgical model tracking system
According to the contract research services and research model provider, the system is designed to track and monitor the continuum of surgical model development, including both the animal and surgeon.
“The system works by implanting RFID microchips into each animal model and scanning them at each step of the surgery process,” Brad Gien, head of North America surgery at Envigo told us.
“Envigo estimates we will realize a reduction in the number of animals used for surgery and inventory said Gien, who described the system as the “first ever effective serialization system for rodents.”
The system as designed to limit human error and provide Envigo with improved access to inventory and metrics. It also serves helps ensure the right medications are taken at the right time, according to the company.
Additionally, the system adds an extra layer of quality assurance and creates a digital repository, which Envigo said “streamlines the regulatory compliance challenges of existing electronic documentation approaches, including failure to compile required data.”
