European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease
The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease has granted awards to four scientists making strides in clinical microbiology at its 25th annual congress in Copenhagen held over the last two days.
Marc Bonten (centre, photo), of the Medical Microbiology department at UMC Utrecht, who also leads the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Research Group at the Julius Center of Health Sciences and Primary Care, received the ‘ESCMID Award for Excellence in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2015’.
Three other clinical microbiologists, Carolina Garcia-Vidal (Hospitalet de Llobregat, Spain), Jason Roberts (Brisbane, Australia) and Roy Sleator (Cork, Ireland), received awards as Young Investigators in clinical microbiology and infectious research.
Bonten was recognised by ESCMID for his work in hospital epidemiology and Intensive Care infections. He coordinates several projects within the Framework Programmes of the European Commission, and is currently leading the New Drugs for Bad Bugs, ND4BB, Programme, a large public-private partnership to develop medicines against resistant bacteria.
